Blood Sugar Self-Screen
Three-part clinical assessment: symptom pattern screen · daily glucometer readings · glucose challenge protocol
How to use this screen: Complete all three sections before submitting. Parts 1 and 2 can be done immediately. Part 3 (the glucose challenge) requires a glucometer and should be scheduled on a convenient day. If you don't have a glucometer, complete Parts 1 and 2 and return for Part 3 when you have access to one. Your results are submitted directly to Stephen at Detective Health.
👤 Before You Start Your Details
Yes — I have Hypoglycaemia (diagnosed)
Yes — I have Type 1 Diabetes
Yes — I have Type 2 Diabetes
Yes — Pre-diabetes or borderline high blood sugar
No — I have not been diagnosed with any blood sugar condition
📋 Part 1 Symptom Pattern Screen
Tick every symptom that applies to you on a typical or regular basis — not just occasionally. Both columns may apply. There are no wrong answers.
Column A — Hypoglycaemic Pattern
Low blood sugar / blood sugar drops
Column B — Hyperglycaemic Pattern
High blood sugar / insulin resistance

📊 Part 2 Fasting Blood Sugar Readings
Test your blood sugar at five points across one or two days using a standard glucometer (available from any pharmacy — or borrow from a family member or friend). Do not eat, drink anything other than water, or exercise immediately before any reading.
Reference Ranges — Fasting Blood Sugar
Whole Blood Calibrated
4.4 – 5.0 mmol/L
80–90 mg/dL · Optimal fasting range
Plasma Calibrated
5.0 – 5.5 mmol/L
90–100 mg/dL · Optimal fasting range
Which type is your meter? Most modern glucometers (from 2010 onwards) are plasma-calibrated. If you're unsure, check the meter's instruction booklet or the manufacturer's website. Plasma readings run approximately 10–12% higher than whole blood readings for the same sample.

🧪 Part 3 Glucose Challenge Test
This test uses a glucose load equivalent to the amount of sugar in a standard can of cola (approximately 40g of pure glucose). It reveals how your body manages a defined sugar challenge — the curve of your blood sugar response and how your subjective experience tracks alongside it. This is more informative than fasting readings alone and can reveal reactive hypoglycaemia, sluggish insulin response, and dysglycaemia that fasting markers miss entirely.
⚠ Before you begin the challenge
Do not do this test if you are diabetic or have been advised not to consume large amounts of sugar. If you are unsure, ask Stephen first. Do not eat for at least 4 hours before the test. Choose a time when you can sit quietly — upon waking, before lunch, or before dinner are ideal. Have your glucometer and test strips ready before you start.
Option A (preferred): Purchase a 75g oral glucose tolerance drink from a pharmacy or online — use half the bottle (approximately 37.5g glucose). These are available without prescription.

Option B: Dissolve 40g of pure glucose powder (dextrose — available from health stores or Amazon) in 250ml of water and drink the full glass.

Option C (approximate): Drink a 330ml can of regular cola — this contains approximately 35g of sugar, of which roughly 17g is glucose. Results will be less precise but still clinically useful.
  1. 01Note the time. Before drinking anything, complete the Start column below: rate your well-being, energy, mind and hunger on the 1–5 scale, then take your blood glucose reading.
  2. 02Immediately drink your glucose mixture. Record the exact start time in the table below.
  3. 03At exactly 30 minutes after drinking: take a blood glucose reading and rate your four subjective scores. Record in Column B.
  4. 04At exactly 45 minutes after Column B: take a reading and rate scores again. Record in Column C.
  5. 05At exactly 20 minutes after Column C: take a reading and scores. Record in Column D.
  6. 06Only if Column C reading was higher than Column B: take one final reading at 20 minutes after Column D. Record in Column E.
